The Uphill Village Society with the benefit of a Heritage Lottery Grant continues to work on its World War One commemoration project.
The children from years 5 and 6 of Uphill Community Primary School have spent the last term researching those named on the village war memorial and who died in the service of their country. They have traced their home addresses in the village making use of on-line resources, the 1911 census for the village and ordinance survey maps of the period. From this they have produced a village trail and leaflet identifying the houses and giving details of the men who lived there.
A special exhibition displaying the children’s work and giving an opportunity to follow the trail will be held in the Uphill Village Hall on Friday 10 November from 10am and again during the village market on 11 November. This will be augmented by additional displays from the Village Society’s own research and project ahead of a major exhibition to be held on the 100th anniversary of the end of the war in November 2018.
